Dear Dad, thank you!
We were supposed to be in Jamaica, lazing about, precious time slipping by, all the while worried about where and how we would acquire our GG van to travel south. Dad saved the day, standard.
Jenna: We arrived in Belize airport early without any understanding on purchasing a vehicle in Belize. At immigration, we were greeted by a huge sign – CRYSTAL AUTO RENTAL, #1 IN BELIZE – COME FIND OUT WHY. This was our one and only lead.
Luke: Our initial choice was going to be a 16 seater mini bus and I was adamant that we were going to strip out then fit it out with all our ‘luxuries’. Our taxi man backed CRYSTAL as a reputable company and so with luggage in tow, we pulled into the lot. We were greeted by the infamous and best known man in Belize, Texan Jay – A character that neither Jenna nor I had ever met in all our years of meeting and greeting people worldwide.
Jenna: Dear ol’ Jay. Immediately I knew he was a Texan, having lived there for many years. In those brief moments of wonder and confusion as to our journey, I managed to shout out every Texan word in my vocabulary.
Luke: Crystal Auto was our first destination and after a few tedious days of educating ourselves on the car market in the third world, it was our last.
Jenna: We were staying in the shantiest of shanty towns. It was horrible. I walked around with mace tied to a necklace. Belize in those early days was a terrifying place, where gangs are at war and sunset means you stay indoors. We spent little time at the shanty town ‘hotel’ and vigorously pressed on to find our van. After a couple of days searching without any tangible leads, we headed back to Crystal.
Luke: We spoke to Jay with honesty as to our budget, and our journey ahead, hoping for guidance to achieve our goal from one traveler to the next. We looked at the options at crystal and had a sneak preview of what would be our home on wheels aka The TANK.
Jenna: We decided on a white workers van and just before signing the contract, Jay took us aside and gave us his best offer for the GG van. I knew I wanted this van and made no attempt at hiding it.
Luke: Yeah real poker face Jenna!!! After an in-depth brainstorm of how I would be able to fit out a workers van with no work shop, tools or materials and in the heat – we decided sod that and signed the deal. We are now owners of the perfect van for our travels – theTANK!
Jenna: We spent the next week living on the Crystal Auto compound working on the TANK and fixing her up, showering outdoors with a hose after hours in the middle of the lot, cooking meals in their staff kitchen and playing with many of the guard dogs (only Luke on the last point).
Luke: Jay helped us to no end and for that we will always be grateful as he is now part of our adventure and memories.
Jenna: After sorting out the TANK, we decided to get a puppy as Jay has tons of them living on his farm. So we made a quick visit to his farm and were bombarded by puppies galore. Which one would we choose to explore the Americas with us? Time will tell 😉
I also got a sneak peek at the kids I’d be working with in the near future. Life happens as it should, be like a running brook.
Jenna: Seeing as we had time on our hands, Jay suggested we hit the road and that’s exactly what we did. On the road again…
